Hillwood Country Club is seeking an innovative, driven, team-oriented Director of Agronomy with a passion for consistently providing exceptional golfing conditions. The Director of Agronomy is entrusted with the care, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Hillwood’s golf course, practice facilities, and surrounding grounds. This individual will serve as a hands-on leader, responsible for ensuring pristine playing conditions and agronomic practices that reflect the high standards of the Club and its membership.
DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY JOB DESCRIPTION
The Director of Agronomy is expected to be a visible presence among the team and members with exceptionally strong agronomic, business and communication skills. He/She should have a natural style of “sincere engagement” with members and staff with a love of the game of golf along with a relentless attention to detail. The Director of Agronomy will lead and manage their department to ensure superb golfing conditions, exceptional landscaping, and environmental stewardship.
The Director of Agronomy must be an excellent, transparent communicator with strong strategic planning abilities and a positive attitude. He/she will have an extensive agronomical knowledge and know-how. Working collaboratively with Club leadership, inspiring confidence and being a strong relationship builder are necessary attributes for success.
Reporting to the General Manager/COO, the Director of Agronomy is an integral part of the Club’s executive leadership team and works closely with the Director of Golf to deliver an outstanding golf experience.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will be a Director of Agronomy or Golf Course Superintendent at a club renowned for providing exceptional golfing conditions and will have the following qualifications:
- Proven history of providing exceptional golfing conditions and top-quality ultradwarf greens year-round.
- Experience with warm season grasses in the “transition zone” preferred.
- Strong attention to detail with an understanding of the importance of course aesthetics.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to build and develop a high-performing team.
- Financial acumen in managing budgets, capital projects, and cost controls.
- Experience with golf course construction, renovations, and capital improvements is highly desirable.
- A leadership style that emphasizes visibility, presence, and engagement on the golf course, ensuring members and team members alike recognize the Director of Agronomy as an active, approachable partner in delivering the golf experience.
EDUCATION, LICENSES, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A degree in agronomy, turfgrass management, or a related field, with a strong preference for GCSAA Class A certification.
- A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in golf course management, including at least 3-5 years as a superintendent/Director of Agronomy.
- Proven and successful first assistants ready to take the next step will be considered.
